Our 200 mile Great South to North Run

I will always look back at my time as a Commando in the Royal Marines with pride and a
huge sense of achievement. It took 8 months of physically and mentally demanding training to earn the coveted Green Beret. Now that I’m out and driving my personal training business venture forward I’m still using all the tools I learnt during my time in the military. It makes the impossible possible, the difficult simple and the hard training easy. Now I’m going to have to draw on all my mental strength to complete the next ultra challenge that myself and Dean of www.warriorcoaching.co.uk/blog  have set ourselves.

We plan to run 200 miles from Norfolk to Middlesbrough continuously without sleeping. The details are still being sorted out as we speak, so I will be updating as and when they come out. The 3rd and final person in this challenge wishes to raise money for a charity close to his heart, so Dean and I will do everything we can to get him to the finish line.

Unfortunately there is no real training we can do for this challenge, all we can do is get
used to running again. Then on the day(s) summon all the strength we have to push ourselves through mental and physical barriers and most importantly stay awake. Watch this space…….

Spoon Fed

Over the years Dean (www.warriorcoaching.co.uk) and I have read countless books on strength, nutrition, conditioning,  etc. and one thing we noticed is that if you’re unsure what works for you, or if you don’t understand the fundamental principles of increasing lean muscle mass whilst decreasing body fat through certain reps and sets. All the while ensuring your nutrition is up to scratch, so you have the right amount of protein, carbs and fat to repair the damaged muscle. Then you have no chance of succeeding in the goals you set yourself….We all need to be spoon fed information from time to time!

The ‘Way of the Warrior 90 Day Challenge’ has been created to solve this problem. You wake up and turn to the relevant page in the book then simply do as it says, for each of the 90 days. So many books out there claim to get you ripped in 30 days, which for 99% of the population is impossible. This program will develop you safely through all the stages and after 90 days you will finish stronger fitter and more agile than ever.

Email us now mark@markthomasfitness.com or dean@warriorcoaching.co.uk to find out more and book your place.

In the very near future we will be launching the definitive workout and nutrition program, ‘The Way of the Warrior 90 Day Challenge’. Not only will this program give you the
workout plans to turn you from the average man/woman to a warrior ready for the
next bigger, tougher challenge. It will also give you a nutrition plan for the entire 90 days, give you access to email support from a Personal Trainer and Mind Set Coach, but most importantly turn you into a leaner, stronger, fitter, healthier and more determined you.

We have meticulously created this 90 day program to not only increase your lean muscle mass, reduce body fat, and increase your strength & fitness but to also improve your
flexibility and nutrition.

for you etc. We give you all the tools you need and tell you exactly what you need to do, to turn yourself into a warrior. Each day you will wake up to your set meal plans, stretches, CV and weight routines. By the end of the 90 days we guarantee that you’ll be leaner, stronger, fitter and that you have never felt better about yourself. So much so, that you want to push yourself harder and find the next challenge………which we will give you!

Way of the Warrior

So myself and my business partner, coach and great friend Dean Grimshawe have finally put dates in the diary for “Way of the Warrior”, a weekend residential Bootcamp set in the stunning welsh valleys…..The Brecon Beacons.

The concept is simple, we use military fitness which is a proven way to get individuals fitter and stronger than they have ever been and we take that to the next level. It’s all very well having these so-called Bootcamps in every park around the country, many people
get results from these. However, many if not most of the military fitness Bootcamps
are run by under qualified individuals, either having never been in the military or not having any experience in personal training, sometimes both. Hence, the term Bootcamp has been watered down.

“Way of the Warrior” is what a Bootcamp should be! The very definition of Bootcamp is a training camp for military recruits. First of all we take you out of your comfort zone, and into the heart of the Brecon Beacons. We then put you through your paces across the Welsh Valleys that the military and even the Special Forces use, due to its demanding
terrain and unpredictable weather. We’ll get you working as a team to navigate
your way around the gruelling and infamous 25km course named “Warrior Way”. Just
when you think you’re at your physical limit, you’ll need to summon all your
mental strength to keep going. We all have a super human ability to push well
beyond our perceived limits, its time you prove this……. Sign up here at www.warriorcoaching.co.uk

“If you always put a limit on everything you do, physical or anything else. It will
spread into your work and into your life. There are no limits. There are only
plateaus, and you must not stay there, you must go beyond them!” – Bruce Lee

Spinach and crab frittata

Ingredients – Serves 4

400g spinach
3 tablespoons olive oil
1 onion, finely chopped
1 garlic clove, crushed
freshly grated nutmeg
6 eggs
1 tablespoon chopped herbs, such as coriander, parsley or chives, or a mixture
2 tablespoons freshly grated parmesan cheese
200g fresh white crab meat

Method

1.Remove and discard the stalks from the spinach. Blanch the leaves in a large
pan of boiling salted water for 1 minute, then drain and refresh in cold water.
Squeeze out the excess water, chop the spinach roughly and set aside.

2.Heat 1 tablespoon of the olive oil in a pan, add the onion and garlic and
cook over a moderate heat for 5–10 minutes, until soft. Stir in the spinach and
season well with salt, pepper and nutmeg, then remove from the heat.

3.Lightly beat the eggs in a bowl. Mix in the spinach and onion, plus the
herbs, Parmesan, crab meat and some seasoning.

4.Heat the remaining olive oil in a non-stick frying pan over a high heat for 2
minutes. Add the frittata mixture and reduce the heat to medium. Cook until the
frittata is set underneath and still slightly runny on top, running a spatula
around the sides to make sure it is not sticking. Place the pan under a hot
grill for 1 minute to cook the top. Slide the frittata out of the pan and leave
to cool for about 10 minutes, then cut it into wedges to serve.

Fat or Fiction?!

For many years now I thought my diet was of a very high quality; plenty of fruit, lots of veg, some carbs, high protein, low fat. This diet worked for me for many years, but little did I know that I was missing out on the benefits of full fat products, organic and locally reared/produced meat and veg etc. I, like every other person in the western world is blinded by false advertising and marketing gimmicks.  Why are we pushed towards having semi-skimmed and skimmed milk when so called ‘full-fat’ milk is only about 4% fat anyway?

I guarantee that if you see a cow in the field, its eating grass, as it’s what they’re designed to eat. It’s nutritional for the cows, and is why meat has the properties it does. When cows are fed on grass, the nutrients from the grass pass on into the tissues.

The most important of these is Omega-3 fatty acid.  A study in America showed that over 25% tested, had so little omega-3 fatty acid in their systems that it was undetectable. This is a serious problem because Omega-3 is an essential fatty acid, which means that it can’t be made within body from other fats and MUST be ingested in the diet.

Omega-3 is only found in animals when they have been fed on grass, like organic free to roam beef that you find in some butchers and supermarkets. When we eat grain fed beef (aside from the problems of modern farming) we find it contains little to no omega-3, which is crazy when you think of all the benefits it has. Omega-3 has protective qualities against Alzheimer’s disease, as well as its effects on reducing heart and cardiovascular disease, decreasing arrhythmia, blood clots and triglyceride levels, lowering blood pressure and improving arterial health.

So next time you’re out food shopping, take a second to read the label and find out if the meat you’re about to purchase is natural grass fed meat or simply the product of super farms which force antibiotics, grain and other un-natural products into its livestock. I for one am going to continue buying meat from my local butcher.

The Competitive Edge

I was discussing my business plans with a close friend and business partner the other day, and we got talking about your everyday athlete. Whether it’s your amateur rugby player, swimmer, competing triathlete, cyclist…..the list goes on.  These people push themselves extremely hard in order to perform better on the day, and they pay a lot of money for the right gear, equipment and gadgets in order to gain the advantage. However, the one thing they may need in order  to gain the advantage, is this competitive edge.

Most of these recreational athletes may not consider a personal trainer is the one thing they need, as they are already motivated and regularly exercise. They might consider a personal trainer to be useless as so many are not accountable. Many personal trainers shy away from accountability and blame the clients lack of commitment rather than taking the hit themselves (I’m going a little off topic with this, however). But it could be the biggest asset to their game, come the big day. Functional, sports specific training could bring them along leaps and bounds.

Until now sports or strength conditioning is an area thought only to be applicable to ultra-athletes like premiership footballers/rugby, professional tennis, boxing, sprinters etc.  I put it to you that we take this knowledge of sports conditioning and introduce it to the likes of people I described earlier. Being a top level boxer doesn’t just require good equipment and a high aerobic/anaerobic base, it requires you to be strong in every aspect of your game. That’s what sports conditioning is, dissecting the main movement patterns of that particular sport and then creating exercises that make that movement easier, stronger, faster etc.

Let’s give these amateur sportsmen and women the competitive edge.
